The Public Records Board has oversight and accountability for the State's Records Program. The Board conducts its work through collaboration with Wisconsin governmental entities to assist in their compliance with records retention and preservation requirements. Statutory authority may be found at Wis. Stat. § 16.61.

Upon Public Records Board approval of a General Records Schedule, the implementation of said schedules by Wisconsin state agencies is mandatory and immediate. Implementation of a PRB-commissioned GRS by the UW System Administration, all UW campuses, all Wisconsin counties, municipalities or other local units of government is optional but recommended.

The PRB-001 and PRB-003, RDA forms, are used to submit records retention requests to the Public Records Board (PRB). Wisconsin state law varies slightly between State agencies and local units of government with regards to record retention and disposition. Pursuant to Wisconsin Statute §16.61 (4), State agencies may not dispose of a public record unless they have a current record retention schedule approved by the Public Records Board (PRB) that covers that particular record series.
